Today is International Women’s Day, a global day to celebrate the economic, political and social achievements of women past, present and future. What better day could there be to start a movement that will improve the lives of women and children around the globe?
On this International Women’s Day, mothers around the globe are mobilizing their voices and their social networks as one of the most powerful forces for creating positive change. Starting today we will take part in the Global Mom Relay, a first-of-its-kind virtual relay with a goal of improving the lives of women and children around the globe who truly need our help.
For the next 60 days we are going to share it forward. Will you join us?
The Global Mom Relay brings together 60 days of online conversations, rallying people around the world who will be commenting, sharing stories, making donations and taking action. Created by the United Nations Foundation, Johnson & Johnson, BabyCenter, The Huffington Post, and the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, the initiative combines the power of moms with the power of social media to raise awareness and funding that will ultimately improve the health and well-being of mothers and children worldwide.
The Global Mom Relay will take place from March 8 to May 8, 2013. Here is how it works:
- Each day at http://globalmomrelay.org, a participant will discuss motherhood, talk about inspiring moms or highlight important issues and causes related to families in a blog post, video or online interview. Campaign participants include: Lisa Belkin, Barbara Bush, Randi Zuckerberg, Dr. Harvey Karp, Reema Nanavaty, Rocky Dawuni, Ann Geddes, and Bobbie Thomas, as well as co-chairs, Arianna Huffington, Elizabeth Gore, Jennifer Lopez, Lynda Lopez and Sharon D’Agostino. Each contributor will “pass the baton” to the next day’s participant.
- Readers and viewers will be asked to share that day’s post and/or to donate to the featured cause. Each time a person shares a relay post via Twitter, Facebook or email, or donates $5 or more, a $5 donation will be donated by Johnson & Johnson and the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation (up to $8,000 per day or $500,000 total). Donations will be made to one of four efforts helping women and children around the globe lead healthy, happy lives. They include: Girl Up, the Global Alliance for Clean Cookstoves, the Mobile Alliance for Maternal Action (MAMA) and the Shot@Life campaign.
Starting today, let’s come together as part of this groundbreaking effort to share advice, stories and inspiration about motherhood. After all, as they say, sharing is caring.
Please show you care and consider taking part in the Global Mom Relay. Visit http://globalmomrelay.org to learn more. You can also follow the conversation on Twitter at #globalrelay.
